It's a late '49 model, as the early '49 was not named anything other than FL.  During the '49 season the company decided to name the bike 'HydraGlide' and stamped the name into the front tins, behind the headlight.

Several experts have verified this bike to be "Very Original".
Has been ridden every year.
Well maintained.
Starts and runs well.

Very old re-paint in excellent condition.
Original gas tanks.
Original luggage rack.
Original mufflers.
Original oil tank/battery box has been chromed.

Original tool box has been chromed.New leather seat about 25 years ago, like new.Original 'sergeant stripes' on rear fender.Original 'tombstone' taillight, which was introduced by Harley on this model. The original glass lens is cracked across the middle as they are commonly are.
Original front fender trim.
Original front fender ornament (glass lens).
Original police spot lights.
Original stainless steel rocker lids.
Original stainless air cleaner cover.
Original stainless steel distributor cover.Original stainless steel clutch cover and primary inspection cover.

Handlebars appear to be original.
No modifications to the frame that we can see.

Linkert carb model M-45. It's brass body is marked 1 1/2 Mod M, 2-398 on forward-facing side.
Front head is marked 19482  D9
Rear head is marked 1948   A34
Crankcase halves are matching numbers 249-11222, both marked 7 on top (which means 74cu in).
The gearbox is stamped "A9", which means Jan 1949.(Feel free to ask for more photos)

Tool box and oil tank are original and were chromed many years ago.
Heat shield is verified original. Most bolts are original.

Headlight is Westinghouse #2. Looking from the front, you'll see 8211 marked on left side and USA 42 marked on right side.

New tires.
New 6v battery.
Totally serviced this spring.

Original rear fender.
See close-up of rear fender showing uneven hinge sizes, which proves originality.

Horn is missing.
Speedometer shows what is believed to be original mileage.
Speedometer overhauled by Palo Alto Speedometer in 2011.
Rear brake switch is period-correct, but not original.
Oil pressure sending unit is not original.
Rocker cover rings were introduced in '52 and are a necessary upgrade to prevent leaks.
